Bedsores - Prevention and treatment of bedsores

Anyone who is confined to bed for a long time is liable to develop bedsores especially if he is paralysed or can manage only restricted movements..The sores usually occur on the elbows, knees, heels, shoulder blades, hips and buttocks..Whichever part of the body bears the weight of the body or rubs against the bed clothes ,that part of the body gets affected..Bedsores can also develop if areas of skin comes in contact with moisture such as sweat or urine and not cleaned properly.
A bedsore starts off as a patch of tender, reddened, inflammed skin..Then the skin becomes purple and breaks down forming an ulcer..These ulcers take a long time to heal.
Bedsores can be prevented.Every hour or so,a period of wrigling the toes, rotating the ankles, flexing the arms and legs, relaxing the muscles, stretching the whole body and then moving in to a new position will stimulate the circulation and prevent joints suffering..If the bed ridden person cannot move, the attendant must change his or her position atleast every two hours.Whever the sick person is washed or cleaned the skin on vulnerable places must be dried properly..If any reddening is seen, sponge the area with surgical spirit, cover it with a soft dressing and try to keep the body weight off it for the next day or two until the redness disappears…
