Keep The Brassware At Home Shining - How to clean and polish brassware

Brass ornaments are considered as items that add beauty and elegance to any household..I love the shine of brass at home..the lamps, the handles of doors, drawer pulls, and other small furnishing accessories...And traditionally, brass oil lamps, flower stands, vases and trays are considered as symbols of prosperity and good luck..Shining brassware brings a traditional charm to your interiors...

Brass is an alloy of zinc and copper..It tends to oxidise quickly when exposed to air, which is a major reason why most brass is given a clear coating of lacquer to prevent this condition..Most conventional polishes coat the raw metal with a thin film of oil to help inhibit future tarnishing..Most metal polishes contain solvents and detergents to remove tarnish, mild abrasives to polish the metal and oils to act as a barrier between the raw metal and air..

Here are a few tips to keep your brassware shining:

To polish antique brass pieces, wash in hot, soapy water to remove grime,wax,etc..Rinse and dry...Moisten a soft cloth with boiled linseed oil and rub on the brass surface until all the dirt and grease have been removed..

Brass will look brighter and require less polishing if rubbed with a cloth moistened with olive oil after each polishing...Olive oil retards tarnish..

Polish with a soft cloth..Very old brass items, especially if in poor condition, require special care..

Unlaquered brass tarnishes when exposed to air.A weekly wiping with a little liquid ammonia on a soft cloth will help keep unlaquered brass shiny..

To remove heavy tarnish, difficult stains and corrosion:wash in hot, soapy water or a weak ammonia and water solution and rinse..Dampen a soft cloth in hot vinegar, then dip in table salt and rub the brass or make a paste of flour, salt and vinegar...You may need several applications..

Brass hearth and fire sets that have been neglected require special treatment...They can be rubed with extra fine steel wool..This requires much time and work..Very fine emery cloth will give quicker results but the metal must be rubbed in only one direction..Do not use circular motions as well..

For polishing, one of the best tools which provide just the right amount of oil on to metal is a yellow, treated dust cloth..Wipe down brass with this cloth and then buff it dry with a soft, cotton cloth..This trace amount of oil in the cloth shouldnot smear or discolour after a buffing..

Keep decorative items dusted and clean...Wash in sudsy, lukewarm water, rinse and dry...Never use hot water on lacquered items as it loosens the lacquer..Do not polish them or soak them in water..

Precautions Against Food Poisoning

Simple precautions against Food poisoning :

Foods of animal origin are the most susceptible of contamination..The muscles of healthy animals are free of bacteria..Meats that are dressed with skin are most prone to spoilage because bacteria remain in the skin despite washing well after slaughter..

Tips to be followed :

1.Be careful when handling meat, fish, shell fish and poultry...

Wash hands thoroughly with hot water and soap before starting any food preparation and repeat as necessary..Remove rings and make sure finger nails are clean before and after preparation..

2.Use hot, soapy water to thoroughly wash food preparation surfaces, such as chopping boards and counter tops..

Never allow cooked food to touch an unwashed surface where traces of raw food remain..Wash plates and utensils used for raw meat or poultry before using them for cooked meat or other food..

3.Always keep raw foods away from other foods, and seperate starchy foods and dairy products to prevent cross-contamination

Ensure raw foods dont contaminate cooked foods, either directly by contact or indirectly...Place raw foods in sealed containers..

4.Wash your dish cloth or sponge with hot water after every use.

This will avoid the possibility of cross-contamination and the spread of bacteria.

5.Keep food refrigerated

If you dont intend to eat food immediately after preparing it,refrigerate or freeze it...Never leave food longer than 2 hours at temperatures between 7 degrees and 60 degrees..This is an ideal temperature range for bacterial growth..

6.Discard foods that smell bad or is discoloured

Dont use food from damaged cans or containers..Never taste foods or sniff at spoiled foods..Tasting will not always tell if the food is spoiled..So when in doubt, throw it out!!

Hope these tips help!!Stay away from food poisoning..:)

Food Poisoning

What is food poisoning ?

Food poisoning usually causes nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea and cramps, headache and sometimes fever and prostration..The infection can be serious in vulnerable people especially in infants and young children, people with chronic illness and the frail elderly..Most cases clear up without medical help..If not medical attention is needed..The microorganisms most responsible are Clostridium botulinum,Clostridium perfringens,Escherichia coli,Listeria monocytogenes,Salmonella strains and Staphylococcus aureus..

Botulism is a grave form of food poisoning caused by a nerve toxin from C.botulism..Symptoms of nerve and muscle impairment are double vision and difficulty in speaking, chewing, swallowing and breathing..The body rids itself of the organism that cause food poisoning through vomiting and diarrhoea..Though it is highly unpleasant,it is the best natural way of clearing the infection..Do not tax your digestive system with food until it's able to handle it..Prevent fluid depletion by sipping a mixture of apple juice and water or weak tea..

When you are confident that your system has settled down, introduce BRAT diet..B-banana,R-rice,A-apple sauce,T- toast..Then try other bland foods such as soft cooked chicken and mashed potatoes..Avoid fresh fruits for a few days..

Self Feeding

When babies are about 7 to 8 months old, most of them would have developed enough eye - hand coordination to pick up finger food and take it to their mouths...The teeth are also beginning to come in at this age..Giving a baby a teething biscuit or cracker to chew on can ease gum soreness as well as provide practice in self feeding..Other goos starters are finger foods which could include bite-size dry cereals, bananas, slices of apples and pears, peas and cooked carrots and small pieces of soft cooked boiled or roasted chicken...The pieces should be large enough to hold but small enough so that they dont lodge in the throat and cause choking...

As soon as the baby can sit in a high chair,he should be included at family meals and start eating many of the same foods, even though they may need mashing or cutting in to small pieces...Give the child a spoon but dont be disappointed if he prefers using his hands...At this stage its more important for the baby to become integrated in to family activities and master self feeding than to learn proper table manners...These will come eventually, especially if the parents and the older siblings set a good example..

Missing Socks - Tips to maintain socks

If you are missing socks, then here are a few tips mentioning ways of maintaining socks...Many a times you must have wondered - i know i put the blue socks in the washing machine...So why is there only one when i take it out of the dryer?Well, you might wonder what i do with the single sock...I do keep it,in the hope of finding the missing one!!I have this funny feeling that whenevr i toss the first one,its pair will make its appearance!Single socks are of no use...Who would wear two different kinds of socks??

Sorting socks is very tricky..Especially in a family where everyone has similar socks, the sorting and distributing process can be a quite a feat..In case you are not able to do the sorting, you can always ask the family to take what is theirs after you the socks pairs together..

Socks are a simple part of the laundry process and one that's easy to master...So it seems..Till date for me,discovering the source of the missing sock is always a mystery! So i have put together a few tips that can help in not missing socks...Here they are :

-Keep them together..Before putting socks in the washing machine, attach pairs together..

-You can use a lingerie bag, safety pins or even office clamps to hold the tops together..You can use a sock clip as well..

-You can load just the socks and wash ofcourse, provided there are a lof of people in the family using socks!!

-Count how many socks you are loading in the machine before a wash and do the same after washing is over..

-Many socks get lost on the way from the machine to the cupboard...They can easily fall off the laundry basket..Keep them right in the middle of the basket!

-Keep a close watch on kids' socks..They leave them just about everywhere...Tell them to put the pair of socks used that day in the laundry basket at the end of the day...

-Know where to look ...Many socks go missing in the middle of the washer..They get stuck there and are suck in..

-Keep orphaned socks in one place..Who knows you might find them some day soon..If you are not able to get the other use the single ones for some other purpose..

-Some socks may be found when you change your bed spread..They might have gotten stuck on the side of the bed...Vacuuming the house also may turn up an occasional sock when you move the furniture at home..

There is both good and bad cholestrol...It is bad cholestrol that clogs the arteries of your heart..A sensible diet  and exercise helps boost the good cholestrol and keep the bad one under check..

3.Control your blood pressure

Aim to keep your Blood Pressure under control at all times..The normal blood pressure is 120/80 Hg mm..High blood pressure puts added force against the artery walls...Over time, this damages the arteries and makes them more prone to risk...

4.Get active exercise

There is no substitute for exercise..30 to 40 minutes of brisk walking helps control your weight, your cholestrol, your BP and ofcourse your risk of coronary heart disease..You can use a treadmill for walking but you should also walk out doors once in a while..Nothing like walking n fresh air..

5.Eat smart,eat healthy

6.Stress less,smile more

Stress is the number one cause of hypertension or high blood pressure..The after math of this will be coronary disorders..Spend time with your family and children to ease your tension..Take time off from work every now and then..Meditate,take up yoga and these will help ease your stress..You can also listen to music..

7.Get a heart check annually

Expressing Breast Milk

Teach the mother how to express breast milk by herself...The mother should obtain a clean cup or container..The cup should have been washed, boiled to collect and store the milk..
Before expressing milk the mother must wash her hands thoroughly..Sit or stand confortably and hold the container underneath her breast..Express the milk and then support the breast with four fingers and place the thumb and fingers while pressing backwards against the chest..Express each breast for atleast four to five minutes, alternating the breasts until the flow of milk stops...Thus both the breats are completely expressed and baby can have the expressed milk from her mother..This an alternate method of feeding babies who are not allowed or not capable of sucking from the mother...When babies are of very low birth weight they are not allowed to suck...These babies are given expressed breast milk from their mothers along with prescribed formula to gain weight steadily..

If the milk doesnot flow well-Ensure that the mother is using the correct technique..The have the mother apply warm compress to her breasts...You can massage her neck and back as well..If the expressed milk is not going to be used immediately, then refrigerate the milk and use within 24 hours..The milk is best when stored inside the fridge..If there is no fridge available,it can be kept covered for up to 6 hours but not more than that..Ensure that the milk is brought to the room temperature before feeding the baby..Expressed breast milk can be used for babies whom mothers are employed..They can express milk and store in the fridge and leave for work..Do not overheat the expressed milk..It should be only warmed enough for the baby to drink..

How To Deal With Frost Bite

With this condition ,the tissues of the extremities, usually the fingers and toes freeze due to low temperatures..In case of severe freezing,it also could lead to loss of sensation and eventually gangrene or necrosis occurs as the blood vessels become permanently damaged..It can occur when you travel in snowy area or in freezing and windy conditions..In case you are not able to move around you can easily get a frost bite under the above conditions..

Your aims should be to warm the affected area slowly to prevent further damage to the tissues and then take the person to the hospital..

A person suffering from frost bite will complain of pins and needles and then pallor followed by numbness...There is also hardening and stiffening of the skin..At first the skin changes colour to white..It is mottled on appearance..After recovery either at home or in a hospital the skin may be red,hot and painful..In case gangrene has set it the affected area becomes black due to loss of blood supply..

In case you are helping out a person from frots bite,do not put the affected part near direct heat..Do not allow the person to smoke..

Steps to be followed :

1.Move the person in to warmth...Either provide lots of warm clothes or blankets if available or let him warm himself up by puttin the affected fingers in the person's armpits...Avoid rubbing the affected area as it will damage the skin..

2.Place the affected part in warm water at 40 deg C...You can apply a light fluffy gauze bandage..

3.You may give painkillers for relief of pain..Also keep the affected part preferrable a limb at a raised level to reduce any swelling present..

Do not allow your children to play in the snow for a long time..Make sure they are wearing  blazers to protect themselves from the frost..

How To Deal With Prickly Heat

This is highly irritating, prickly red rash that most commonly occurs in hot weather..It develops when sweat glands are blocked by bacteria and dead skin cells...The rash affects areas where sweat is trapped and cannot escape or evaporate such as feet...People who sufffer from prickly heat may also be prone to heat stroke...

Your aim should be to relieve the person from discomfort and pain..There may be prickling or burning sensation in the affected area..There can be rash of tiny red spots or blisters..

Children are also affected by this..During summer they should be clothed with cotton and loose fitting clothes..Make sure they have a short hair cut during summers as well..Try to bathe them atleast twice..The areas affected are usually the back side of the neck and also the axilla and back..There are various commerical powders available..Make sure they dont itch the affected area as it will cause lacerations and sores..Ofcourse do not take kids out in the sun..Nowadays airconditioners are available at home to stay cool!

If it is an adult encourage the person to stay in cool conditions and also cool the skin by gently sponging with cold water...On sponging with cold water the prickly heat eruptions just subside..

Kangaroo Mother Care

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is acre of a small baby who is continuously carried in skin to skin contact by the mother and exclusively breastfed...It is the best way to keep a baby warm...KMC can be started as soon as baby is born and when the mother is ready right from the hospital..KMC requires the mother to be with the baby all the time..

Ensure that the mother is fully recovered from any child birth complications before she begins KMC.Ensure that the mother has support from her family members..The mother needs to be explained the advantages of KMC as it will keep the baby warm, eases the baby to feed and episodes of apnoea will be less frequent..

Steps to be followed for KMC :

1.While the baby is recovering from an illness, the mother can begin to hold the baby in skin to skin contact for short periods of time..

2.Once the baby's condition is stable, the mother can begin KMC.

3.The mother should wear light and loose fitting clothes..The clothing should be able to accomodate the baby..

4.Ensure that the room is atleast 25 deg C..

5.Expalin KMC to the mother in detail and let her try it out first..

6.Clothe the baby with a prewarmed shirt open in the front,a napkin,a cap and socks..

7.Place the baby on the mother's chest..

8.Place the baby in an upright position directly against the mother's skin..

9.The baby's hips and elbows are flexed in to a frog like position and the baby's head and shest are on the mother's chest..

10.Place the baby on the mother's chest under the mother's clothes and cover with a prewarmed blanket..

11.Use a soft fabric folded diagonally in two and secured with a knot..Make sure it is tied firmly enough to prevent the baby from sliding out if the mother stands but not so tightly that it obstructs the baby's breathing..

12.After positioning the baby, the mother can rest with the baby...She can move about as well..

13.The mother can breastfeed the baby when he or she wakes up..

14.If the baby cannot breastfeed, the mother must give him expressed milk..

15.The mother must always maintain good hygiene washing her hands frequently..

16.The best sleeping position for a mother during KMC will be in a reclining position...She can use several pillows..

Thus with KMC the baby is always with the mother and can be closely monitored and well taken care of...
