Diaper Tips-Disposable And Cloth Diapers

Diaper Tips

Where there is a baby,a diaper also needs changing often!Whenever you feel that the diaper is wet or heavy or you find stool,it has to be changed.Initially you may have to change the diaper after every feed.

Diaper decisions:

There are cloth diapers and disposable diapers.

-Cloth Diapers

They are the softest against baby's skin.If you wash them yourself.cloth diapers are the cheapest of all diapers! But work is a little more as you have to soak it in an antispetic for sometime before washing. You may hand wash or machine wash.but wash baby's clothes seperately. In case of machine wash choose soft wash. You may use a fabric softener also so baby's clothes will be smelling sweet and also will be very soft.

-Disposable Diapers

They usually fit better and absorb better than the cloth variety. But they cost more and disposing them can be an enviornmental concern. They are easy to use and very handy.

First week of baby's life-

By the end of the first week, expect about 6 to 8 wet diapers(disposable)daily. The urine should be pale in colour and have little odour. Most babies have a bowel movement after every feed or several times a day.Stool colour and consistency changes after a week.

-For the first 48 hours, your baby's stool will be greenish-black and it is called meconium. This is the waste that built up in your baby's system while the baby was in your womb.

-By day 3 or 4,your baby's stool will become browner.

-By day 5 ,baby's stool will be yellow and very bright if breast fed.If baby is fed formula, stool will be more solid and greyish-yellow in colour.

How to change a diaper - tips :

Keep your baby's tender parts rash-free by cleaning his or her bottom every time you change diapers.Follow the tips below

-Wash away urine and stool with warm, wet cloth and dont forget to clean between the folds.Always wipe girls from front to back to prevent any infection. If your baby was circumcised give extra care.

-If you use baby wipes, limit the risk of skin rash by using a type without any alcohol and fragrance.Do not use lotion and powders.

-Dry baby's bottom completely before putting on the clean diaper.

Diapering with the cloth-Tips

Cloth diapers can be folded to fit your baby and readjusted at all times.Fold the side edges of the diaper in at an angle,so the front of the diaper is 3 layers thick.

-Bring the front of the diaper up between the legs without twisting.

-Pull the front and back edges of the diaper together. If you use cloth diaper pins, pin each side.Put plastic pants over to limit leaks.

-Diaper wraps can be used over to hold them in place without pins.

Safety Tips-

-Never leave your baby alone on a changing table or surface.in an instant baby can roll over.

-Put a mat or mattress on the floor and place the baby on it for changing diaper. This way, you'll have more space and baby cant fall off the edge.

-If you use cloth diapers and pins, make sure the plastic hood locks the hood shut,so it wont pop open again. While removing a diaper, make sure you keep the pin far away from the baby,so baby wont be poked by it.

Gardening Tips-Orchids

Orchids are lovely plants and when they bloom, the flowers stay for as long as a month. They can ve divided in to two types-monopodial and sympodial.Monopodial such as phalaenopsis,Renanthera and Vanda have a main stem which continues to grow after a year but Cattleya and Cymbidium terminate tgrowth at the end of each season.A new shhot emerges at the end forming its own bulbous stem which laters blooms.

In addition to the epiphytic orchids there are also ground orchids or terrestrial orchids which grow like ordinary plants on soil.

Orchids in nature grow protected from the sun by the shades of trees. They can be grown in specially designed orchidaria or orchid houses made from materials like split bamboo, glass, glass nets, etc.Tropical orchids enjoy humid, warm atmosphere ad burst in to activity during rainy season.Temperate should be grown in cool houses.Orchids dislike sudden changes in temperature. The best suitable temperature is 18 deg to 30 deg.

There are also orchids that can be grown in the sun. They are Vanda,Aranda,Arachnis,Renanthera. These can be grown in open trenches filles with brick pieces, charcoal, etc.

Sunlight And Water:

Indirect sunlight is ideal for orchids.seedlings require less light.Poor light also retards growth.Humid warm atmosphere is most essential for the growth of most of the tropical orchids. These do not have well developed root system. The plants should be watered 2 to 3 times a day and should not be allowed to dry up during hot climate.Plants in active growth require more water.Similarly plants in baskets require more water than those in pots.Use standard nozzles to water spray carefully.Do not allow a jets of water splashing on orchids.Freshly potted orchids should be watered sparingly.

Pots/Containers:

Orchids should be potted in small pots or containers according to their size of the plants.Orchids should be under potted to get more flowers. The pot or container should provide enough aeration.Plastic pots retain more moisture than mud pots.Vanda can be grown in baskets as well.Orchids should not be repotted frequently and should be done only when necessary.

Potting Methods:

While planting orchids like Spathoglottis,Phaius and Calanthe,a ratio of 1:1:1 of a mixture of leaf mould,FYM and sand is used. For Phphiopedilim a mixture of 2 parts of leaf mould,2 parts of loam soil and 1 part of brick pieces is used.In case of Rhychostlis gigantea chunks of hard wood charcoal alone promotes better flowering.Generally as a rule you may use charcoals, coconut husk, brick pieces and tree fern fibre while potting to get better flowering orchids.

Manuring:

In nature orchids obtain their inorganic nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium, boron, copper, zinc, iron, etc from the tree on which they grow on and also from the atmosphere and droppings of birds.Under controlled conditions, the major and minor nutrients must be supplied to orchids.Liquid fertlisers are more readily absorbed by orchids. Both solid and liquid forms are available in the market. As they grow slowly, slow release fertliser like osmocote can be used.Requirement of the manure depends on the stage of growth.During vegetative growth large quantities of nitrogen are needed while after flowering nitrogen requirement is reduced and phosphate requirement is increased.

A slow release fertiliser mixture of NPK in the ratio of 20:20:20 with trace elements and coconut water applied every week for three successive weeks followed again by NPK in the ratio of 10:20:30 gives good result in flowering. The pH of the solution used should be acidic or neutral and never alkaline.

Glass Painting

Glass painting is a very interesting type of painting..It is very simple. You should buy yourself the glass painting colours and glass painting liners. You may buy it as a kit or buy seperately. There are dark and light colours available.Choose colours with discretion according to your painting.

Select a glass, whether square or rectangle or round,it doesnot matter. What matters is that the edges of it should be smooth. You may draw your own picture according to your imagination on the glass as an outline with the liner of your choice. After it has dried well, just add in the colours carefully without any smudging.Isnt this simple.

In case you cannot draw on your own, trace a picture of your choice and keep it underneath the glass and use the liner on top.Follow the outline with the liner.

After the painting is completed, let it dry  well. After the drying process is over, you may frame it and hang it on one of your walls at home..Why buy a painting when you can do so yourself..

You can also do glass paintings on glass tumblers, vases, fish bowls,aquariums..Follow the same procedure.I have posted few pictures..The paintings i have done are all framed..i usually paint them..i love painting...One of my favorite hobbies...Look up portrait drawing and shading

How To Bathe Babies-Sponge Bath

A bath tub is usually loved by a child and it is more convenient than a basin while bathing.Use a tub only after 6 months and after your baby has learned to sit up by herself.Make sure you massage the child with a good baby oil for few minutes before giving him a bath. You may spread a clean towel on a colouful bath mat while doing the massages. The bath mat is so inviting to the child.Children love playing in water. You may use bathing toys also while giving him a bath.Make sure he doent cry while being given a bath.Use clean towels always.Wash the towels frequently.Use seperate small towels for the face.Never use a child's towels for an adult.Clean the bath tub and bath mat also after every bath.Make bath time a fun time.Do not give soap or shampoo to the child to play with. And never leave a child unattended in a bath tub.Do not bathe your child in a bath tub that is in the bath rooms. Those are meant for adults.Small size tubs are available for children.

Sponge Baths:

For the first few weeks, sponge baths are a good way to bathe your baby.If your baby is preterm till the doctor says to proceed, give the baby only a sponge bath.

Place your baby on a bath mat or on a clean towel on a table or on the floor. Then bathe your baby from head to toe. Here are a few tips:

-Wash your baby's face, using water and a clean soft cloth/towel or fresh cotton balls.Gently wipe the eyes and the corners of the mouth.Wash behind your baby's ears and under the chin.Wipe your baby's eyes from the inside corner outward. To prevent infection use a seperate cotton bal lor a clean area of the wash cloth or towel for each eye.

-Use a fragrance free baby soap to wash your baby's body.Clean btween the folds of skin but do not wet the umbilical cord stump.Uncurl baby's fingers and wipe the palms.Wash under the baby's arms and behind both the knees.Remember to wash between the toes.

-Always bathe the genitals last.Wipe girls from front to back to prevent any infection. While bathing a boy, never push back the foreskin if the baby is not circumcised.

-If your baby has hair, shampoo at the very end of the bath once/twice a week.Use a mild,no tears shampoo and do not let it enter the baby's eyes.

-Keep your baby warm while you dry his or her wet body.Cover your baby's head with a dry towel.you can use hooded towels also.

Caring For The Cord:

Wipe the stump of the umbilical cord with alcohol several times a day. There are no nerve endings,so dont be scared.Cleaning is not going to cause any pain to your baby.Use a cotton swab to wipe aroud the base of the cord. This helps prevent infection and dries the cord off and it will fall sooner.Usually it takes 10 to 14 days.Once the stump falls, you can wash your baby in a shallow bath and get the entire stomach wet.

Safety Tips:

-Never leave your baby alone in a bath.Even an inch of water can be deadly for a new born.

-When adjusting the water, start with cool water and then add hot water to it.Mix the water till it feels warm but not hot.Always test the water temperature with your elbows.

-Clean only the parts of your baby that you can see.Dont poke cotton swabs in to your baby's ears or nose.

Management Of Diabetes

Diabetes can be managed well by eating a healthy diet, maintaining normal body weight and being physically active.Follow the simple instructions carefully.

Blood sugar should be monitored regularly.

-Once a three months if diabetes is contolled with diet alone.

-once in one and a half months if diabetes is controlled with oral anti diabetic medicines.

-once a month for patients taking insulin.

-For a diabetic patient the target of blood sugar should be < 120 mg for fasting blood sugar.

-Two hours post prandial should be < 180 mg.

-More stringent control is needed in case of diabetes seen in pregnancy.

-microalbuminuria should be done once a year to detect any damage to kidneys.

-Blood lipids must be checked once a year.

-Eye check up should be done once a year.

Diet:

Diabetic patients must take a well balanced diet that provides adequate nutrition and maintains normal body weight. If a person is over weight,he/she must lose excess weight and completely avoid fatty and fried food and also restrict calorie intake.

A good diet consists of whole grain cereals, pulses, beans, vegetables, salads and fruits.Fruits should be chewed well so that the fibre content is consumed.Fruit juices must be avoided at all times.Sweets, sugar, honey, alcohol and refined carbohydrates must also be avoided.

Exercise:

Exercise reduces blood sugar and offers numerous metabolic, cardiovascular and psychological benefits to the diabetic patient.Muscles of the body use glucose as fuel for energy,so the glucose in the blood gets consumed and the blodd sugar comes down. Also exercise helps the body to use insulin better.Exercise also makes the heart stronger, increases HDL cholestrol, lowers blood pressure, boosts immune system, reduces stress and gives a sense of well being. The amount of exercise needed for a person depends on the weight, age, lifestyle and health problems of the person.Brisk walking and cycling controls blood sugar better than any other exercise.

Activities that can be incorporated in to our daily regime are:

-using the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator

-parking the car farther away from the place of visit

-walk rather than drive for short distances

-doing household work

-doing gardening

-joining a dance class

-Playing some games

Medications and regular visits to the physician must be strictly followed to regulate the dose of medications and to monitor and prevent the complications of diabetes.

The real me - a poem on me

The Real Me - A poem written by me while i was in my 10th std

Here iam in my own world

Locked away form the rest of the world

Iam always on the blue side of lonesome

Even the good Lord has forgotten me

For iam a poor little maiden

With no beauty or intellect

They forget i have a heart

Full of emotions and dreams

No one to reciprocate my love

Iam always humiliated and hated

But i swear this much is true

I'll keep fighting this world

Till the very last breath in me

People try to rule and exploit me

Forgetting the fact that iam born free

No one knows the real me except me

And the talking walls that surround me

My face is always seen lit up

But the real me is full of grief and sorrows

I long for love and freedom

And hope that it would come true

someday.....

A Tribute to my Parents

Tribute to my parents on their 25th wedding anniversary

You've done a lot for me
More than i can list
Ever since i let out my first cry
You've held me gently in your arms
With warmth and tender love
Far beyond the reach
You've encouraged me,hoped with me
Your help is constant
Through the changes that come my way
You've helped me to my feet
Every time i stumbled
And cheered me up
Every time i succeeded
I cant thankyou enough
For your love,care and guidance
And for believing in me
I cherish the moments we've shared
Thankyou for standing by me
Through everything
Through all the craziness, ups and downs
My life seems to bring
You've gone through
Many hardships and sneers
For the sake of this family
And i thank you for that
Even though we are miles apart
You are always with me in my heart

She loves travelling in car...i take her out often because she loves it...she is pretty obedient for her age.she replaces her toys after playing.she doesnot ask for anything from anybody's house when we visit somebody. That is so nice.People always appreciate that gesture and well behaved manner.Encouage your child even in small manners.Teach them when they are young and they will not depart from it,even when they get older!

How to bring up a preterm child

Well,my baby is one plus now....she was born after 32 weeks....i was on bed rest from my 26th week....she weighed only 2.2 kgs which means she is a low birth weight or a LBW baby....

From the very beginning the concept of minimum handling should be followed...only the baby's mother and the caretaker for the mother and the baby are allowed to handle...this is because of the lesser weight of the baby and the inability of the baby to fight infections as the immune system is not fully developed...many people dont understand this..no matter how hard you try to make them understand..but i will tell you one thing...do not bother for others...your priority is your child...God gave this child to you to bring her up and not to them...

Always talk to your child even when she cries..reassure her that you are there for her..Do not shout or get angry ever...Children's psychology will be affected.so never ever do it..Make sure that you breast feed your child till the age of 6 months by all means...If you are not able to do that for certain reasons, make sure you give a good formula like lactogen or nan..Use cheatle's forceps to hold the bottle or teat or lid...Never touch with your fingers and contaminate....Be very careful with sterilisation procedures...Sterilise every time before you prepare a formula...Do not reuse the milk once prepared..Discard the same...Prepare fresh every time..Once after the baby is 6 months old should you try giving her semisolids..She should be able to swallow...Not otherwise...Can give farley's rusks, baked apple, bananas, bread in milk,cerelac....After teeth  start erupting you may start giving solids...Iam publishing whatever i did...

My child was very slow in her milestones for 8 months...Till 5 and 1/2 months, her  had no neck control...then slowly rolled over by 7 months...then sat up at around 8 months only..once she sat up..then on miles stones were great...She immediately was able to stand up with support..She started cruising around furnitures soon after and then started walking on her own...Now she runs!!!!Dr.Maya from Jeyasekaran hospital was my gynaecologist...She really helped me during my stay at the hospital and also gave me lot of moral support..because i didnot want the baby to be kept in an incubator in a newborn nursery...well,i didnot have to do that as by God's grace she was active after birth...Please also make sure that every vaccination is given at the right time...Please follow the immunisation schedule...Her paediatrician Dr.Mohan again from Jeyasekaran hospital reminded me of the immunisation before hand..

Please talk to your child also...Always interact..It helps a lot...Talk in your vernacular and also in english because then she will be bilingual....Buy your kids first books on everything--animals,birds,toys,words,alphabets,rhymes,colours,shapes,numbers,flowers,
vegetables, fruits, parts of the body,courtesy....please do not pressurise your child...you are only creating an interest in your child...Take her outdoors and familiarise the surroundings to her..Take her to a zoo and show her animals...Any chance you get show her what she sees in her books in real life..She will be over joyed...She is your life after all and you love her more than life itself!!!!
Well,i do!!!

Well, coming to diapers ,i used huggies dry care and pampers active baby.Fixies are also good...Always use a size slightly bigger and dont fasten it too tighly...Always use a good baby lotion before you use a diaper to avoid any diaper rash...Also do not use dispers all the time and only when necessary..In countries like india, the climate if pretty hot and this causes sweating and discomfort to the baby...Change frequently...And use for naps and while going out...Use only an approved baby product..You have a whole range of them...Powder,hair oil, shampoo, baby lotion, baby oil,cream...In india Johnson's products are used...Use also baby wet wipes...

Toys:

When it comes to toys...you may start with rattles of small sizes for a baby of few months and increase in size after that...teethers are good..give her soft toys of all kinds but make sure you wash them often...do not allow thumb sucking...because that leads to maxillary prognathism....As they grow older buy her dolls, building blocks, rings stack...get her to think!!!

Babies love routine...They like to know what comes next and get used to it and dont fuss about it...that way they cry less!!!Give a nice warm bath before you put her to sleep followed by a massage with baby lotion....Baby will sleep so peacefully...Babies love to be touched!!

Once she starts to stand up on her feet with support, very soon she is going to cruise around...So make sure there is no electrical socket left open, glass or earther vases....Anything that can be broken should be moved away....Leave your kitchen cabinets closed...Once on her move, you have to be extra careful!Make sure she doesnot fall off the stairway....Take her out in your yard on her pram....Buy her a walker,so she'll cruise around...A walker is not meant to teach her to walk but it can help a bit!!Push toys are better.....

Right from when the baby is a few months old start cleaning the baby's gums....then once the teeth start erupting, start brushing...till the child is able to do on it's own,you will have to help the child...Make sure they brush twice....

Buy them crayons and let them get creative!!!Buy them lots of nursey cd's and let them watch....These are great ways to encourage your child...

Hope my articles help you rid off the fears of bringing up a preterm child..Happy bonding!!

From my mother to me

I wish i could always keep you happy,
I wish i could understand your feelings
when you cant say them loud
I wish i could tell you how much you mean
And i would care for you all night and day
I wish i could know you better
And never leave you alone.....
